HASNA - a full service story.
Published 17 July 2020
Anyone who has explored HASNA, either in person or using our virtual yacht tour, will understand that this is a yacht of quite peerless pedigree and outstanding quality. It will come as no surprise to learn that she won the World Superyacht Awards 2018 in the 500-1,999GT class but what you may not know is that HASNA, in almost every respect, is a Burgess yacht.
We sold the project to the original owner, we were the owner's representative overseeing the design process and technical development of the build, we have managed the yacht, sourced and managed her crew and managed her for charter.
Building something special
HASNA's owner appointed Burgess New Construction to project manage the build, a three year process of staggering intricacy and, literally, microscopic attention to detail.
'I knew we were involved in something very special,' recalls Rory Boyle, a naval architect in the Burgess New Construction team since 2007 and the designated owner's representative for the build. 'The owner had a crystal clear idea of what he wanted, an exceptional family yacht with different spaces for use throughout the day, transforming for party fun by night. Due to their clean and elegant style, the owner awarded RWD, a studio with whom we've worked many times on new build and refit projects, the responsibility for interior and exterior design, realising the whole concept.
'After two years of project development and shipyard tendering, Feadship RVL was chosen for the three-year build as the most appropriate yard to complement the owner’s intricate eye for detail. RVLS upheld his confidence in them by building some of the highest quality steel and aluminium work we have seen in any shipyard.'
'This included the flush main deck pool, which saw many months of design work to capture the client's requirements in creating a curved glass waterfall feature at the aft end and windows into the beach club below.'
The complex art of management
As HASNA was nearing delivery, Burgess won the yacht management contract. Kevin Renshaw, who was HASNA's yacht manager, is a Master (yachts <3,000GT) who joined Burgess in 2010 following an 11 year career at sea as deck officer, safety officer and captain on both private and charter yachts.
'The yacht management team became involved with the yacht during the build to help setup the planned maintenance system, as well as the operational procedures onboard,' says Kevin. 'The same yacht management team has been following and supporting the yacht right up to today. Our team ensured that HASNA has always maintained compliance with all ISM, ISPS and MLC regulations, and we have been there throughout the life of the yacht to this point to ensure safe and legal compliance.
'Obviously it's been a huge responsibility, looking after every aspect of the management of a 73m yacht, but that's what we do, for this owner and over 100 others - and we've done it for over 30 years now. No two yachts are the same, all have differing requirements and each yacht needs - and gets - a tailor made management programme executed by a dedicated yacht manager.
'Our job is to make sure that the owner gets maximum enjoyment out of ownership. We take care of everything. Whether that's our 24-hour emergency response service, berthing, operational management, technical support, accounts, safety and security - anything and everything involved in keeping the yacht operating at optimum efficiency is our responsibility. Having all that experience and expertise in house makes communication seamless, both within the team and across departments. That's where our advantage lies: it's experience, expertise and efficiency.'
The personnel touch
Crew is the beating heart of any yacht and Burgess Crew Services was honoured to be entrusted with every aspect of crew management for HASNA. Our first involvement with HASNA involved helping the owner find the captains and chief engineers, they have been onboard through the build and are still there today. They were also one of the first yachts to benefit from our state of the art SAGE accounts system.
'Anyone who has ever managed any group of people for long periods of time will know that there are so many elements involved in achieving and maintaining peak team performance,' says Burgess Partner and Fleet Crew Manager Lucy Medd, part of Burgess since 2006.
'Recruitment, robust and compliant employment agreements, travel, training, payroll, there's a huge amount to consider whether you have six crew or 60. But as Kevin said, it's what we do. We are all human resources experts in Burgess Crew Services and every dedicated personal crew manager can draw on all of that experience in an instant.'
HASNA, delivered in 2017, was always used as a private yacht, a place where a family can spend quality time together away from all the distractions and diversions of everyday life. Then, in early 2020, the Burgess Charter Management department had its proposal accepted and was able to announce its appointment as worldwide Central Agent for HASNA charters.
Generating charter revenue
'Having built the yacht and managed yacht and crew since delivery, we know HASNA inside out,' says Caroline Boisson, Monaco based charter manager who has been with Burgess since 2011. 'On top of that our charter managers have fewer yachts to manage than any other broker so we can devote more time to personal service for each yacht. Then there is our experience, advice on how to equip a yacht for charter, deep market knowledge that helps us negotiate charters and building relationships with clients to deliver quantifiable results and the highest possible level of customer service.'
'She's an absolutely exquisite yacht, one of the finest yachts on the market and we are proud to be able to represent her for charter. Within a couple of weeks we had booked her first charter and the glowing feedback confirmed our belief in HASNA.'
HASNA is a very special yacht that has sailed through the lives of many of us here at Burgess. Above all she is a prime example of the many efficiencies to be gained by owners when taking advantage of the full circle of Burgess services, in HASNA's case: Brokerage, New Construction, Yacht Management, Crew Services, Charter Management and Marketing.
It has been both an honour and an immense pleasure to have been involved with her in so many ways, from concept to delivery and beyond, and we are certain she will grace many an anchorage for years to come.
