Working for change on World Oceans Day
Published 07 June 2022
The theme of United Nations’ World Oceans Day this year is Revitalisation: Collective action for the ocean. To support and celebrate this goal, we are releasing a series of podcasts that addresses sustainability issues one by one and looks at easily workable solutions
‘Our oceans are the origin and the engine of all life on this planet and, as we all know, they are under threat. The superyacht industry has a huge impact on ocean health, but while we are definitely part of the problem, when it comes to ocean pollution, we can definitely also be part of the solution.’
This is how Burgess’ Lorena Gimenez, host of the podcast series, introduces the first episode in a series of seven podcasts. Each looks at a sustainability issue facing the yachting community, explores ways the problem can be addressed and invites suggestions for best practice from yacht crew around the world, people who are living this experience first-hand, via @BurgessYachtCrew on Instagram.
Guests this month include Charter Manager Alex Guy, Technical Manager Elliott McMullen, both of whom have worked on yachts for years before moving shoreside so have a unique understanding of the operational challenges, Assistant Manager Environment Michela Betti and Georgina Menheneott, Partner at Burgess and founder of Burgess Blue Oceans.
One of Michela’s duties is to ensure yachts in the Burgess-managed fleet comply with all relevant environmental regulations, a burgeoning role as legislation in this field grows rapidly. In many ways this series aims to pre-empt regulation by taking responsibility into our own hands by establishing best practice and implementing the changes that need to be made without waiting for legislation to mandate them.
We're also getting our own house in order. For every transaction we are involved in - and in offsetting our corporate travel - we finance conservation projects with our partner Blue Marine Foundation. We also invite our clients to join us with their own donations. Every Burgess client can choose to play their part in this vital journey to protect and restore the world's oceans: together we can do so much more.
Each episode drops at the end of every month to coincide with the ‘Sustainability practices of the month’ post on @BurgessYachtCrew. To make sure you don’t miss one, subscribe to the Burgess Yachts podcast wherever you get your podcasts.
