Best for… sparkling coves

Isola la Maddalena is just one of the many islands that make up Italy’s La Maddalena Archipelago. Providing sheltered coves, beautiful deserted beaches and Roman ruins ashore, the island is the antithesis of neighbouring big sister Sardinia and provides the perfect antidote after a few days spent in the bustling and glamorous Porto Cervo.

Best for… spectacular views

For those on a cruise that takes in the Amalfi Coast and Sicily, the Aeolian island of Salina provides a restful retreat. Arguably the most beautiful of the islands, and one of the least affected by tourism, Salina is green and fertile with a phenomenal amount of flora and fauna for those looking to step ashore. With spectacular views over smouldering Stromboli, the island’s best anchorage is at Pollara.

Best for… escaping the crowds

When cruising the gilded coastline of the French Riviera, head to the archipelago of natural splendours known as Îles d'Hyères. Those in the know have been escaping to the quietly glamorous island of Porquerolles for years, but few have heard of neighbouring Île de Port-Cros. Surrounded by an underwater reserve with protected marine life, the waters are teeming with fish and are perfect for snorkelling. Cars and even bikes are banned, so step ashore and explore the winding paths and sun-drenched vineyards on foot.

Best for… pure charm

Meganisi is part of an archipelago of islets in the Ionian Sea that includes Scorpios (of Aristotle Onassis fame) and the lesser-known Oxia. Meganisi itself is relatively unspoiled but with some significant development apparently on the horizon, we recommend that you go sooner rather than later to discover the beautiful hidden coves that punctuate the coastline.

Best for… going under the radar

Numerous itineraries can be carved out through the Greek Cyclades archipelago, with every island offering an astonishing wealth of charm. The cosmopolitan island of Mykonos is famed for its nightlife which rivals that of Ibiza, while Santorini is best known for its stunning sunsets, soaring cliffs and unique topography. However, the island of Kea has been left off the tourist trail, despite its close proximity to mainland Greece, instead attracting Athenian weekend yachties who actually come here to avoid the crowds, leaving the beaches relatively unpopulated.

Best for… deserted beaches

When cruising in the southern part of the Cyclades, step ashore to the family run taverna on the uninhabited (except for goats) Kato. Neighbouring Ano Koufonisi is equally charming; small enough to walk around and with a welcoming beach bar to reward your efforts, these twin islands really are a pair of hidden gems.
