Captain Vincent on W EXPLORER.
Published 07 June 2021
Born with salt in his veins, there was only one career choice for Vincent Servet. Now captain aboard 36.2m ‘little ship’ W EXPLORER, he has been at sea all his life and his passion for sailing is infectious.
The Mediterranean is his playground and with his local knowledge he plots a route to take in all the hidden bays and legendary culture on offer…
What inspired you to become a captain?
I am a seafarer by birth. I started sailing when I was six years old, and made my first transatlantic voyage a decade or so later. After working aboard boats operating between Sicily and the Balearics, the move into yachting was the natural next step. I joined W EXPLORER as captain at the start of 2020.
What do you love about W EXPLORER?
This yacht is set up for fun! The huge sun deck with bar, BBQ, jacuzzi and steam room; all-weather open air dining on the main deck aft, with a bar just inside for entertaining; high-tech TV and sound system for movie nights. We can organise a party in no time, themed evenings for special events, birthdays, and even weddings.
Then there are the watertoys: jetski, stand-up jet, flight board, SUPs, windsurfer, donuts, water-skiing, snorkelling… you name it, we have it.
What sets her apart from other yachts?
I think she looks like a 'proper little ship', and the children love that too. Her distinctive looks make her a head-turner in any anchorage.
Plus, she is a lot of yacht for your money – and with low fuel costs.
Where will we find you on board?
For me, the best place has to be the bridge - it is the control centre of the whole yacht. I like to take out the paper navigation maps and show guests how we plot our route, taking into account the drift of the wind and the current... Children love to spend time on the bridge and they learn something interesting too.
Tell us about your crew…
Will, our mate, is in charge of the watertoys. He loves to take care of our guests, and encourages them to let their hair down. He'll also take the time for a game of PS4 with the children if they're up for the challenge!
Leo, our second stewardess, loves the bar! She’s the one who organises all the themed and fancy dress nights – just tell her the evening of your dreams, she will take care of it.
Greg, our chief engineer, is all about the engine room. This is his universe in the centre of the ship, where everything happens. He loves to show people around, so just ask.
Lawrence, our chef, is extraordinary and we are very lucky to have him. He will prepare you meals worthy of the greatest restaurants - everything is made from scratch! Guests take photos of the food before tasting it.
Who charters W EXPLORER?
Families love this yacht. There is a place and activity for every generation, from old to young. Everyone finds their favourite spot - parents like to relax on the sun deck with a good book, or in the shade of the bar drinking the smoothie of the day. Children play with the toys for hours! And at the end of the day, everyone is relaxing in the jacuzzi with a glass in hand.
What do guests love on board W EXPLORER?
The adrenaline junkies spend most of their time in the water, while for those who need a little TLC the sun deck is the ideal place - in the sun or in the shade of a parasol. Then there are the trips ashore for shopping and sight-seeing. We tailor the itinerary to each party.
Where is she cruising this summer?
We are sailing the south of France, Italy, Sardinia and Sicily. There is so much to do, so much fun to have, so much history and culture, great restaurants, incredible shops, hidden anchorages, secluded coves – the Mediterranean really offers something for everyone.
What are you looking forward to?
It can get very busy ashore and the best way to explore is by yacht - finding all the beaches that no one else can reach, enjoying the sunset on the beautiful coast, in peace and safety.
If you could take W EXPLORER anywhere - where would it be and why?
That is a difficult question to answer… we have so many magnificent coasts and anchorages in the Mediterranean that I am struggling to choose just one! My favourite place is surely Sardinia – I would enter by the Maddalena National Park, stop at the island of Budelli and then continue along to the east coast of Sardinia. Then I would spend the night at anchor near Porto Rotondo, Cala di Volpe and go snorkelling the next morning at the edge of the majestic cliff of Tavolara Island.
