Published 29 July 2019
The oldest international sporting trophy and most exciting event in yacht racing is making a return in New Zealand in March 2021.
The fastest boats in the world will converge on Auckland to take part in the 36th America’s Cup Match presented by Prada. The Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, will compete against the winner of the Prada Cup (taking place January-February 2021), the Challenger Selection Series, in a best of 13 (first to seven points) to win the coveted prize.
The racing area will take in Auckland’s iconic landmarks, including the Waitemata Harbour, the Hauraki Gulf and the harbour bridge, and will provide a plethora of racing options with a range of wind conditions and directions.
Founded in 1851, the America’s Cup began when a schooner named ‘America’ crossed the Atlantic to race at England’s Royal Yacht Club and winning the Royal Yacht Squadron’s 100 Pound Cup. The Club decided to donate the trophy to the New York Yacht Club, stating that it would be “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations.”
