Ian is a former British Merchant Navy Deck Officer with nearly 40 years of experience in the marine industry and an MBA in Shipping and Logistics from Middlesex University and Lloyd’s Maritime Academy. Committed to safety, quality and sustainable excellence in maritime operations, he joined Burgess from the Sustainable Shipping Initiative. Before that, senior roles included Director Group Operations with P&O Maritime in Dubai and Australia and Project Director, Operations Director and Marine Director at James Fisher in the UK.

He has extensive experience operating a wide range of commercial vessels including general cargo, heavy load, ro-ro, bulk carriers, offshore transhippers, nuclear fuel carriers, science, survey and research, icebreaker resupply, oil and chemical tankers, tugs, pilot and mooring boats, DP2 cable ships and dive support vessels operating worldwide.

Ian also spent two years as a business coach and mentor to owners of SMEs providing them with a positive focus as well as additional management, leadership and team development skills, personal development and a fundamental eye for finding solutions, taking action and achieving results.
